Cost someone’s what?

A large group of people were walking along a dirt path crossing a field. The field was grassy laid flat like newly laid carpet. There were sparse trees to the left that swayed in the slight breeze. Among the people and halfway across the field was a man who was flat on his back and not moving. There was no one else near him, and no one was doing anything to help him.

Something prodded her off into the field. Always in time, always like she was seeing the future. No one, not one of all of these people stopped. So she walked in a straight line right up to him.

What did he say?

His eyes were locked in a position that was skyward as though focussing on a moving leaf. His steady gaze, without blinking alerted her that he might not be aware of his surroundings. His crimson face showed a purpose that his lying there was no indecision. He was not there by accident.

Well maybe if everyone else had walked on by, so should she? But it wasn’t possible. He and she knew that she wouldn’t. She had screamed it’s okay, it’s alright.

Yes.

And he put up his hand to make her wait for just one moment. He needed to see what was happening. She stopped, looked at his face and the image was fixed. His eyes filled with wet watery red blood. He swallowed and Pink! from his mouth spurted.

In that moment she looked at his face and saw an aged person and quickly checked herself. Not old. Okay. His hand went down in a gesture and she went down on her knee. So that his face might see the canopy of blue spring sky. And partly so that all she could see were clouds of white moving slowly across.

And she was perfect, galvanized into the important things. The world was still and trickling with patches of sun that dappled over his wrinkled moving lips and tongue. Only once did he spit out the blood and then dried up. All the time their certainty rose. And they looked up, feeling very comfortable with each other. They waited for both of them, each in his own way, symptomless blood. And he had a peaceful smile so far on his face since now.

Tell me. What happened next?

The things that had given way within her that evening, settled like a roosting dozing bird. She knew a lot about this toothless man and who may have loved him. the moment was whole. She waited for the signal, lying inside herself with her eyes closed.

In their minds, intelligence had become more and more a bond and a trust in one another. He sat up.

Then, all the signals pulled him back into normal everyday life. Impulsively, he turned and never spoke a word. He and the lady both stood up. Together they walked back into the cluster of people walking.

pat on thock, said his hand. Fetch.

He obediently doodooed and the lady reached that point where he stood easily and tranquilly. His eyes were once again in front but slowly sloping downwards.

The enormous towering background began to churn with the other females. Each one taking it in turns to lead the group into the right direction.

Then all the men filed away, right after all the females. The lady called three times like an alto who had not been at her work. Do, don’t, aye just look! She gathered his arm and did not find it closed. A smile closed in at the corners of her large satisfaction.

Then like a trudging grumbling pail she and the graying colour of her man walked away from the field. They left them all behind out of their sight and all being left to do what they wanted. Football, selling ciders, joining a love somewhere else. Yet, the couple walked quietly out of the field looking into their fascinating and beloved faces that dwelt in their hearts.

No one save the lady looked back.

She followed him on out.

She stepped forward.

He moved out of sight and she didn’t bother to check.

She walked in the night alone into the sky.

She followed him home.

She went and went on out.

why?.
